Happy 4th of July

Let's celebrate with pomp and parade

Did you know that John Adams, one of two signers of the Declaration of Independence, is the reason we celebrate the 4th of July holiday with fireworks, barbecues and parades?

In a letter to his wife, Abigail in July 1776,  Adams suggested that Independence Day be “the most memorable Epocha in the history of America.”

“I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding generations, as the great anniversary festival,” Adams wrote. “It ought to be commemorated, as the day of deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shews, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and Illuminations from one end of this continent to the other from this time forward forever more.”

Today, 235 years later, we still have lots of reason to celebrate. It is the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence – a celebration of freedom, independence and opportunity for all.

So what  do you think of the 4th of July?  We think it is a good day to do some free writing. Here is your prompt for the day?

What are you wearing today? Is it red, white and blue? Why or why not?
