School’s Out, Write Your College Essay

School’s out this week, and rising seniors need to get serious about the college admissions process.

Where should you start? Start with the essay.

Why? For many students, it is the most daunting part of the application process. It is also one place you can really stand out from the college-bound crowd.

Before you start writing,  think about why  you are being asked to compose  an essay.  Colleges want to know:  Who are you?  Can you write? Are you a good fit for the university?

If you haven’t done so yet, head over to the Common Application website; take a look at the six essay topics. Even if you aren’t applying to a Common App school, many college essay topics are a variation on these questions.
Think about what story you can share that does the best job of showing readers something real and meaningful about you. You might be surprised at what you decide to write about!
