What do you do when your students show you application essays that just don\u2019t seem ready to go?<\/p>\n<p>This is the point in the process when professionals and other well-meaning adults can overstep their roles. No worries. <a href=\"https:\/\/wowwritingworkshop.com\/college-essay-writing\/professionals\/\">We\u2019re going to share our simple approach to reviewing essays on a tight deadline.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This time of year, we get countless requests to review essays before students submit them as part of their applications. We know students have poured a lot of time into the essays; we know they want to be done; we also know there is limited time to make any major revisions.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>How to Review a College Essay<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Begin by letting go of any preconceived notions about what makes a good essay. In fact, we suggest replacing the word \u201cgood\u201d with the word \u201ceffective.\u201d It\u2019s important to let each student write their story in their own voice using their own words.<\/p>\n<p>There is no rubric for an effective college essay, but the ones that stand out all share a few common features. Regardless of the prompt, they:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Answer the question.<\/li>\n<li>Showcase a positive trait or characteristic.<\/li>\n<li>Sound like a high school student.<\/li>\n<li>Illustrate something meaningful about the student.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate reflection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wowwritingworkshop.com\/college-essay-writing\/professionals\/\">You will know if an essay is effective if it has a theme, which answers these two questions<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What happened?<\/li>\n<li>Why does it matter?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-24890 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/wowwritingworkshop.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Pen-tip-logo-large-round-gray-bgrnd-367-x-361-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>We recommend reading without a red pen in hand, and without your hands on the computer keyboard. Just read. Make sure you know what the essay is about and why the student chose this topic. Then ask two key questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is anything missing?<\/li>\n<li>Is the college essay\u2019s purpose clear?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wowwritingworkshop.com\/college-essay-writing\/professionals\/\">Double-check the prompt<\/a>. If the prompt asks the writer to reflect on an experience and its influence on them, be sure your child has talked about both the experience and its effect.<\/p>\n<p>Use the checklist below to evaluate a traditional personal statement, such as the Common Application essay, the Coalition application, the University of California personal insight questions, ApplyTexas or any primary prompt from schools that use their own applications.<\/p>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/wowwritingworkshop.com\/college-essay-writing\/professionals\/\"><strong>College Essay Review Checklist<\/strong><\/a><\/h5>\n<p><strong>College Essay Review Checklist<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Content Review<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Does the essay answer the prompt?<\/li>\n<li>Can you tell why the writer chose this topic?<\/li>\n<li>Is the essay about the student, or is it really about the place, person or experience featured in the essay?<\/li>\n<li>Does it illustrate a trait the student wants to share with colleges?<\/li>\n<li>Does it tell colleges something meaningful about the writer that is not clear from the rest of the application package?<\/li>\n<li>Does the essay sound like the person who wrote it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Structure Review<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Does the first paragraph make you want to keep reading?<\/li>\n<li>Does the essay move smoothly from beginning to end?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Polish Review<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Does the essay use the same verb tense throughout?<\/li>\n<li>Has the writer avoided sentence fragments and run-on sentences?<\/li>\n<li>Is the punctuation correct and consistent?<\/li>\n<li>Is every word spelled correctly?<\/li>\n<li>Does the student feel confident and proud of the work?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That\u2019s it.
